In 1998, the United States imported $5.9 billion more in
edible fish and seafood than it exported. That's the largest deficit of
any natural resource besides oil, according to the National Marine
Fisheries Service. And in the next 15 years, the service estimates the
annual global demand for fish and seafood will increase by more than 50
percent, to 120 million metric tons.
